John Ellis says: This is another very strong shot marrying a Shakespearian Romeo and Juliet scene (complete with look-a-like balcony) with the ultimate in modern naval warfare (well, it might be a bit long in the tooth but you know what I mean!). One is carried from bottom to top and from land to water. It is also tonally spot on.

John Ellis says: This is like a still from a film by a top European director - replete with the oddities and excesses of life.

John Ellis says: I just love the depth here, so subtly drawn without any flashiness. Three modes of transport with one pulled into contrast and focus in the centre - the most eccentric (but worthy) one. The car in the foreground is more abstract, while the bus in reflection is more ghostly.

John Ellis says: The people are dressed in their day to day clothes and yet they seem to be taking refuge in some fun - cheap, judging by the price on the cellophane-wrapped doll. The mask is a sad echo of grander masquerades.

John Ellis says: This shot takes the more literal layering from reflections but makes the woman a figure to remember afterwards. Clever use of lines and colour linkages, and the vanishing point, make her the anchor for the shot, particularly the colour red.

John Ellis says: I still see this as a Far Eastern dance superimposed on a snowy mountain scene - slightly surreal and visually gripping.

John Ellis says: B-side. This is a bit like Alice in wonderland with the red queen not pleased at being discovered. Weird faces on the walls, a man about to stand on a bucket and a woman admiring some sort of handiwork strut their stuff while a very concerned bearded man wonders how he can get the red queen out of this heathen place.

John Ellis says: A good use of portrait mode to turn horizontal layers into vertical layers as well. The colours play well in this framing and the man counter-balances the red vest well.

John Ellis says: I actually preferred a B-side that had a stronger narrative about age and the dislocation of time but it was not available for a gallery. So I reverted to this one, where the strength is in imagery and a bringing together of contemporaneous moments of time.
