Dark Ardenna
A wedge-tailed shearwater momentarily glides along the shoreline of the nesting colony. This one exhibits dark morph plumage, uncommon in the Central Pacific. Fast and agile in flight they are often found in pelagic flocks of hundreds. Wedgies seasonally dig a burrow in coastal sand dunes with their bill and feet, usually under the roots of a shrub, and lay a single egg. Biparental care in incubation, fishing, and feeding duties follow. The first part of the Hawaiian name, ‘ua’u kani, resembles the sound of the bird’s call which is often described as mournful or haunting and is fascinating at night when a cacophony of dozens or more can be heard in the nesting colony.
