Mongoose on the Loose
Brought from India in 1883 to unsuccessfully reduce the rat population in sugar cane fields, the mongoose is common on several of the main Hawaiian Islands. An opportunistic omnivore, mongooses are a threat to indigenous wildlife, especially ground nesting birds. Contrary to described behavior, I have also seen one climb a tree in search of food. But they can also be entertainingly cute to observe and have an extensive folklore.
