Into the Sunrise
A red-footed booby on a heading into the rising sun on the way to sea for a day of fishing. It has a stout, tapered, saw-toothed bill that is well evolved for plunge diving into the ocean from heights of as high as 30 meters to catch fish and squid. Boobies, or ‘ā, have acute vision and are able to easily see their prey of fish and squid under water as they soar over the ocean. Their visual acuity is contrast enhanced by carotenoid pigments that assist seeing through the air/water interface. They are also agile flyers and able to catch flying fish skimming the ocean surface.
