Catch of the Day

An ‘auku’u, or black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax hoactli) shows off a fresh caught tilapia cichlid. After a toss or two, the fish is turned around to enable swallowing head first. This indigenous sub-specie of night heron is diurnal in Hawaii and can be observed in most aquatic habitats, from protected upland watersheds to coastal urban drainage channels.
