Reconnaissance

A black-crowned night-heron (Nycticorax nycticorax hoactli) surveys the bank of a windward Oahu marsh. The ‘auku’u is a well-adapted ambush hunter, preying on fish, crustaceans, and frogs in an assortment of waterways from mountain streams to urban drainage channels.
