Red-Billed Leiothrix

This strikingly colorful and lively bird sings a melodic song, but is most noticed for loudly chattering a harsh warning at passing hikers. It keeps hidden in the rainforest understory, usually peeking through several layers of foliage at the recipient of its chatter. Native to southern China, the red-billed leiothrix (Leiothrix lutea) was a popular cage bird released to the wild in Hawaii in 1918.
