Sea Dogs

Watching the predawn twilight, a pair of Hawaiian monk seals (Neomonachus schauinslandi) emerge from the ocean, galumphing up the beach toward me. The Hawaiian name is "ilio holo i ka uaua" meaning "dog that runs in rough water." These endangered pinnipeds are among the rarest marine mammals.
