Jean Colombe Pentacost Restoration
This came from a Book of Hours attributed to Jean Colombe, from about 1475. It was rubbed and damaged, but it does show Colombe's interest in rendering deeply sculpted interior spaces, gold grisaille portraits, and luminous accents. The figures and faces are typical of his style, even echoing work he did in the Tres Riches Heures, but the Virgin's face was horribly redone later and the painting was rather mangled. Jean Colombe is not an easily accessible artist for collectors nowadays and the elaborate room screamed for some help. After weeks of study and comparison with similar versions in several Colombe manuscripts, I carefully reconstructed what is a reasonable rendering of the scene, and I extended the right margin.
