Intergalactic

I didn't get out with the camera much over the weekend, so after work last night I headed up to Dartmoor with Darren to try our hand with some astrophotography.

Astrophotography is something I have no experience in, I've had maybe one or two tries in the past with varying results, but it's something I'd like to do more often. It can produce some amazing shots and when I see a great astrophoto I do get a bit jealous.

So, last night with the promise of clear sky and with moonrise later in the evening, we headed to Great Staple Tor to see what we could get.

We had a lot of fun up there, but it was a massive learning curve. Trying to focus was the hardest bit, even setting my lens to infinity didn't really do the trick so it took several attempts to get everything pin sharp. We wanted to photograph some star trails, but we'd left it too late as you need a good few hours to produce a photo like that, so we just decided to settle with a shot of the night sky.

I set up a composition with one part of the tor and shot it as a silhouette against the stars. I did consider light painting the tor but I really need a better torch as mine wasn't strong enough.

Still, I ended up with a photo I'm happy with and I think I'll definitely be heading out to do some more as the warmer weather approaches. It was a bit chilly up there last night!!
