The Stars My Desination
The spiral staircase at Heal's Department store on Tottenham Court Road in London was designed by Ambrose Heal’s cousin, the architect Cecil Brewer, the staircase was completed in 1916 with an echoing helix of lights installed after the Second World War. A refurbishment project in 2013 saw this design landmark restored to its former glory, with a bespoke Bocci chandelier.
I first discovered this staircase after seeing it on Flickr and knew I had to go get my own shot of it. I took several views, from the top and the bottom.
This shot is looking up from the bottom of the staircase with my camera rested on a table that's situated right in the middle, when looking down from the top the table reflects the wonderful chandelier back towards you.
I've given this shot a cooler white balance as it was fairly orange which I wasn't too keen on, I think the colder blue tones really give it a spacey look.
The title of the photo comes from the classic scifi book by Alfred Bester, I thought it fitted the shot as you can imagine climbing the stairs to the stars.
