Tunnel Vision

Southwark Tube Station was opened in 1999 as part of the Jubilee Line extension. It designed by Sir Richard MacCormac of MJP Architects.

This shot was taken at about 6:30am on Saturday morning when the station was devoid of the crowds that pass through it during the height of the day. It's a very busy place and it was good to catch it when it was empty.

Not being allowed to use tripods on the underground, I balanced my camera on a small shelf that runs along the back wall, allowing me to use a longer shutter speed and lower ISO to reduce any noise. Trying to line it up was fun, and although my camera has a swivel screen so I can view it at pretty much any angle, it was still a challenge getting it perfectly in place. I still think it's a little off centre, but not too much.

I think it's quite a cool looking station and looks quite futuristic. Although it looks symmetrical it's slightly off kilter which is a tad annoying. The top of the middle bit between the steps doesn't line up with the ceiling which does look slightly odd and ruins the otherwise perfect symmetry.
