3 Big Outings

Three Big Outings

Over the past couple of months I have been pushing my photographic skills and as a result I have been pretty happy with the images.

From time to time I get asked “Who takes your photos?” Well I do. That is me and my tripod. Now yes a couple of times at events I have had someone take photos for me (Hi Cassandra) and do my makeup – twice (Hi Amy) but all makeup is by me and I have had a friend on 3 occasions take photos of me in Saskatoon to help with her photographic skills but really, overall the images you see are taken by me. I use an Olympus mirrorless camera and lenses and I just wish I knew how to use the whole camera but overall I am happy with my camera and well, the results that I get.

Some memories from these three photo sets. The one thing consistent in each is that I am supremely calm and content when I am doing these shoots. I don’t worry at all about who could see me and what they might be thinking. And in fact I am getting better and better at interacting with people if they are nearby my setup.

Red Jacket Day: I had the outfit planned so that is where that all began. I thought the red jacket and black dress with white stripe (the dress was purchased when I was in Atlanta) would go together nicely. I went to one of my go to spots on the University campus and I think I was just trying to get some sort of magazine cover photo that night lol.

The Umbrella Day: That was the evening of our local Pride Day Parade. I was not able to get there for any of the activities as I was working but I hustled and threw myself together and got out for some near to sunset time photos. This is a different perspective shooting from the eastside of the river and because of the location that I was setup in, it was very busy with foot traffic so there were many people walking past. I had a girl around 13 with her little sister walk past and say that I looked pretty and I helped a family get the perfect sunset background photo when I saw they needed some assistance so that was nice. Over the years I have been pretty fortunate capturing some good photos of myself but this series is way up there. I am very very happy with these results. I paid about eight dollars for that umbrella about 7 years ago and I have used it as a prop many times and it was absolutely perfect for Pride Day.

The Jean Jacket Day: Again I was thinking about that dress and what I could do to spice it up so I added the jean jacket. I have used this look in the past. Back when my friend Samina was working at one of the retail stores I would visit, she would quite often grab things for me and have me try them on and one night it was this jacket and well I have had it for awhile now. I keep trying to get the perfect sunset behind me photo. This day I was actually not setting out to do that. My plan was to take photos at a few spots that I either had never taken photos at or had not been to in a longtime. I wanted a photo at the intersection where the Pride colours were painted and so that was where I started. Silly me I should have taken it from the other side where the trans colours are. From there I went to a few other spots in the city and the same thing, people around and there I am with my tripod and camera. I must get better at being ready to say Hi and greet people when I am out, it sometimes catches me off guard. So there I was, I had hit the spots I was wanting to and there was still good light so I ventured back to my spot on the riverbank and well the sunset was looking great so I gave it another try and I was pretty happy with what I got. Then something happened. The sky just POPPED and a truly glorious sunset appeared. It was so peaceful that I just sat down on the bench and admired what was transpiring. I did take some photos of the sunset and when it was all done I decided that the evening deserved some ice cream so I went to Dairy Queen for a strawberry sundae. It was a nice way to end the evening.

I don’t think I am going to add anymore here. I just want you to know that you can do it. It is scary at first. But when you do it the first time, you will do it many more times. Get out there and enjoy yourself. Head up, eyes forward, stand tall, know where you are going and smile! Enjoy yourself my friend.
