Wilco – Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
If you have been here over the years you will know that I have shared this album before. But it is so so so very good.
I could gush about everything on this album. I could tell you how many times I have listened to it. I could tell you what it means to me. I could tell you how often it has pulled me up. I guess I just did.
The album is a beginning and an end. It marks the end to anything that Jeff did with Jay Farrar. It also marks the end of working with Jay Bennet. (What is it with Jeff and guys named Jay?). It also is the beginning to the sound and vision that Jeff had for Wilco. There is no doubt that Jay Bennet was used to shape the sound and vision of Wilco but as you can see in the wonderful documentary by Sam Jones – I Am Trying To Break Your Heart: A Film About Wilco – Jay and Jeff as a team had run its course. The album is about change and being strong enough to move forward with what you believe in. That is again prevalent in the band being dropped from their label and searching for a new label that believed in them (check the movie out for more details).
So ya, there were plenty of things floating about as this album was coming together and what never wavered was the belief in the songs – the lyrics – the music.
I was able to hear Wilco perform this album from beginning to end at The Solid Sound Festival in 2015…ya that was super cool. Poor Places is my all-time favorite song and when it is played at one of their concerts I am a happy human being.
