League of Heroes: Ascent - Rising from the Flames - Part 1
The following is a transcript from an audio recorded therapy session conducted by Doctor Jillian Garnet:
Patient 5173: It all started with the fire…
Dr. Garnet: Excuse me? I don’t follow.
Patient 5173: All of this, my “new” life, these “powers”! … Doc, give it to me straight, am I in some kind of trouble with the law here? You are some kind of a criminal psychologist or something, right?
Dr. Garnet: I can assure you that you aren’t in any trouble. Now relax, and please continue Mr. umm…
Patient 5173: Just call me Indestructible, or Mister Indestructible, or the Indestructible Man… or you can call me Fred.
Dr. Garnet: Okay, Fred it is, so you were telling me about this fire Fred.
Patient: The fire. You remember a few months back? The big prison downtown? The top blew off the place, a bunch of goons escaped. Well, the caped crusaders who rushed into that place weren’t the only “heroes” on the scene. I was a fire fighter, and my unit was dispatched to the scene first. We were trying to contain the blaze so that it didn’t spread to the next block. The flames were extra hot in this blaze, and the smoke coming off the place had a peculiar noxious scent. A real stomach churner. It was about the time that the Silver Sentry got to the prison that things went from bad to worse. Him and a couple of super powered buffoons were going at it real good. They were making a fine mess of the foundation. We knew the place was coming down, but at the rate they were pummeling each other, the building was going to collapse sooner rather than later.
Hey, you listening Doc?
Dr. Garnet: Yes, I was just taking a few notes. Please go on.
Patient 5173: So, as I was saying, this place was coming down around our ears any minute. That’s when we hear some yelling from inside the place. A few of the guards were still trapped inside, and they needed help. I grabbed my ax, and without taking time to think about it, I ran into the blaze and started pulling these guys out. After getting three out, I decided to go back in to check for more… and WHAM!
Dr. Garnet: Wham?
Patient 5173: Yeah, WHAM!!! Just then the ceiling came down on top of me. I was trapped under the rubble. It hurt real bad too. I could feel that I had broken a bunch of bones, my legs were shattered to splinters, and I had punctured a lung on a piece of rebar. I could feel every injury, and the pain was unimaginable. It got hot, real hot as the flames grew closer. Then I blacked out.
Dr. Garnet: Yet, here you are. Unscathed.
Patient 5173: Yeah, it’s a regular miracle. I came to later. I wasn’t sure whether I had been out for hours or days. All I know is that the flames had been extinguished and my body no longer was a twisted pile of broken bones. Heck, I didn’t even have any burns on me. However, my uniform told a different story. It was charred and torn. I knew that I hadn’t been dreaming. When I sat up, that was the first that I noticed the puddle of green liquid that had formed around me. Apparently, something had been dripping on me all this time from some overhanging pipe. It was oily and stunk like the smoke I had mentioned earlier. All I could figure is that this goo gave some sort of powers. That sound crazy to you Doc?
Dr. Garnet: I’ve heard crazier Fred. Though, that doesn’t fully explain what happens next…
