Position: Roztoky, Slovak Republic. Hoofed woodpecker ( Forester fomentarius ) is a perennial inedible wood-destroying fungus of the chorous family .

The fruiting body grows sideways to a beech trunk or q in mountain forests, where it is most abundant. However, it also grows in the lowlands, for example on birches, poplars, maples, oaks, lindens, walnuts and hornbeams.

Fomes fomentarius is widespread from the Arctic Circle to the Mediterranean.
