A Ballet of Seagulls

Anyone would have associated this shot with the beaches - and in the San Francisco Bay Area , the Fisherman's Wharf, where these seagulls have been tormenting and tolerated by the locals for decades. However, this shot is taken in Dublin, the area where i live, which is 40 miles inland from San Francisco and 20 miles from the nearest open waters of the San Francisco Bay in Oakland.

I've seen a few of these seagulls lingering around here before but today there were swarms of them (more than 50 is a LOT) - almost like a scene from Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" but thankfully they aren't interested in pecking at us humans to death. I was running errands at a grocery on Sunday which is just walking distance from home and saw these birds making a lot of ruckus like they're excited about something - circling the skies and squaking overhead. I immediately went home, took the camera and came back to snap a few shots of them. Turned out that these birds were excited about and feasting on ONE filled garbage bin behind a restaurant close by. Bet that restaurant will hear from the Health Department soon. (I didn't see the swarm by Monday but I could see a dozen still flying and hovering over the area up in the sky).

These birds may be a sight to behold in an inland area - but a swarm is too much. They're made for and should stay close to the beach where they truly belong as nature intended.

Well, at least I am thankful I didn't have to drive all the way out to the beach to practice shooting live targets - with a camera, that is! :-). I had taken and post the scenes of the crime below.

Processed the above shot with levels/adjustments, and rendered HDR with a single raw file, then applied smoothness and sharpening effects. Also used masking tools to adjust the brightness levels on the birds. Thanks for checking it out l
