Jackson Heights - Roosevelt Avenue Station, E, F or R Train, Uptown Platform, Structural Detail, Vendor Kiosk 2014.08.09

One of the things that I never quite understood about the MTA is how they let so much of their potential commercial space go unrealized. The above photo is a perfect example of the potential of a small footprint commercialization on the platform. The vendor's entire store sits directly in the otherwise wasted dead space under a stairwell; it provides not only rental income for the MTA, but increases platform security as there is the physical presence of the vendor there, giving waiting passengers a greater degree of safety comfort while allowing them access to the sorts of small feel good items or necessities that people appreciate.
