Northern Flicker (Yellow-shafted x Red-shafted) - Hillsboro, OR 12/29/24 IMG_9229 (1)

When this bird showed up at our suet feeder this morning I instantly knew there was something different about this bird when I saw the red V on the back of it's neck and head. I consulted my Sibley's Birds 2nd Ed. Guide and discovered it is an intergrade (cross) between a Yellow-shafted x Red-shafted Northern Flicker, the first of this type I've ever seen in all my years of birding. What a surprise, and right in our own back yard.
