In the past, most Alcea rosea cultivars have been biennials however, the Alcea Hollyhock Spotlight Series are true perennials with stable, straight colored, single flowers. The Rosea Spotlight Blacknight bears rich, velvety purple-black blooms on tall stately stalks. These hardy plants will grow to 6 feet tall with branches of 4-5" single blossoms.
With the height of their flower stems, hollyhocks are commonly used as a backdrop in perennial beds and are well suited for 1 gallon or larger sized containers. Pinch to produce more compact and bushy plants. Hollyhocks attract butterflies and hummingbirds and are beautiful in cut flower arrangements.
