104. Dogwood

A new addition to my "One of a kind" flower images project. As you will see from the explanation below - what we think is the flower is actually modified leaves?. I will have to find a flower soon and put it under the microscope :-)

 

Dogwood flowers are not "true" flowers. White petals are actually bracts, modified leaves that surround centrally positioned miniature yellowish-green flower heads. Each flower head consists of 20 to 30 individual flowers. Dogwood produces bisexual flowers (they contain both male and female reproductive organs).
