In 1982, synthesizers continued to be pushed to the forefront on new records by previously guitar-based bands like Devo, Modern English, Blondie, and The Psychedelic Furs. A swarm of synth-pop newcomers like A Flock Of Seagulls, Yazoo, Eurythmics, Peter Schilling, Men Without Hats, Tears For Fears and Talk Talk joined the college and mainstream radio fray, while in the background, punk continued to develop into new sub-genres with debut albums from Descendents, Bad Brains, Misfits and others.
Elder statesmen Roxy Music released their 8th and final studio album after 10 years and a dozen personnel changes. Blondie called it quits after their 6th album The Hunter, their first album to come up short of Gold or Platinum sales on either side of the Atlantic. After 4 albums each, Madness finally arrived in the States with their breakout hit “Our House,” and The Clash cracked the U.S. Top 10 with their fifth LP, Combat Rock.
Adam Ant kicked off his solo career sans The Ants, Depeche Mode hit number 8 in the UK with their second album A Broken Frame, and Duran Duran achieved global superstar status with a series of slick MTV-dominating videos from their 2nd album, Rio.
