A total of 15 dolphins were taken for captivity - Taiji, Japan
October 29 , 2018 - Bottlenose Dolphins Capture – Taiji, Japan
Taiji: This morning the pod of bottlenose dolphin that was driven in to the cove yesterday was subjected to a brutal live capture selection, which took over four hours. Several of the dolphins were aggressively grabbed and netted, then dragged under the tarps for trainers to inspect. Many of the dolphins exhibited signs of extreme stress during this grueling event.
A total of 15 dolphins were taken for captivity; these individuals were forcefully taken from the rest of their pod, made up of other dolphins they are closely bonded to. The remaining dolphins in this broken pod were driven back out to sea.
6 of the captured dolphins were taken to Moriura bay and the other 9 dolphins taken to the Taiji harbor sea pens.
At least 1 dolphin taken to the harbor has died, indicated by tarps drawn at the butcher house. There was no intentional slaughter this morning, this dolphin and any others that may have been taken to the butcher house died as a result of the capture process. Cove monitors have confirmed that at least 6 dolphins are in the harbor pens. The team will continue to be on watch for the rest of the captured dolphins throughout the day.
