The Small Magellanic Cloud
This was taken from outside Brisbane. Something a bit different. This is a small dwarf galaxy in our local group, but small only by name. This was not taken with a telescope. This was not taken with a fancy tracking mount, or a super camera.
This picture was taken with a D90 on a tripod with a 50mm lens. That is it. The SMC is massive at around twice the size of the moon and easily visible with the naked eye. It and it's big brother the Large Magellanic Cloud is huge.
To understand the sheer size of it take a look at this panorama of the night sky: apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap110509.html
