My contemporary photographer was Annie Leibovitz. Her work is not available as a collection online, but you can check out "Women" through ILL or from the Squirrel Hill library. "Women" is a collection of women from all walks of life. The shots I enjoy the most are the ones of everyday, normal women whose lives were in some way represented in each shot. Dr. Johnson is a botanist and self-proclaimed plant nerd. The greenhouse was the most telling background for this shot. I encouraged her to discuss the plants as if she were teaching me to get just the right body language and expression as I didn't want a portrait feel. I opted to go b&w for this shot to emphasize the sunlight streaming through the windows as well as to fully appreciate the different shapes and textures of the flora in the building.

I was bound by not wanting to be disruptive of the lab environment in moving things around, but if I could have carte blanche to do what I wanted I might surround Dr. Johnson with more of the plants. Also, I was told that I could only check out a specific type of tripod from the studio and it was not as tall as I'd have preferred to work with so I was limited in how I could set up the shot.
