New Year's Eve surprise
Three pronghorns showed up in the park across from my parents' home in Cheyenne, Wyoming. VERY unusual for them to be in the middle of town like this; they generally stick to the Air Force base and the outskirts. They didn't seem bothered much by people, though. This little doe calmly laid down and started chewing her cud about 20 yards away from me.
The Pronghorn is a truly unique animal. The only survivor of its Ice Age lineage, scientists say it's more closely related to giraffes than to antelope or deer. It is capable of sprinting up to 50 mph, making it the fastest land animal in the Americas and second fastest in the world after the cheetah.
