Hiding in plain sight
This strange little creature is called a Jagged Ambush Bug. A type of assassin bug, it lies in wait on flowers and preys on other bugs that visit, seizing them with those mantis-like front legs.
Their camouflage is excellent: their jagged armor serves to break up their outline, and their brown and yellow coloring helps them blend in even further. On yellow flowers such as sunflowers and goldenrod, they are nearly invisible.
