USS Yorktown

USS Yorktown CG 48 is a Decommissioned Ticonderoga Class Cruiser at the Naval Inactive Facility,Philadelphia,PA on August-14th-2021.Her Keel was laid down on October 19th-1981 at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula,Mississippi.Yorktown was launched on January-17th-1983 and sponsored by Mary Matthews,and commissioned on July-4th-1984.During her first years of service,Yorktown served in the black sea and also helped with the Achille Lauro Hijacker intercept,and the Libyan coast,Operation EL Dorado Caynon and Operation Attain Document and Prairie Fire.In 1988 Yorktown was involved in the Black sea bumping incident of February 12th 1988 by the Soviet frigate Bezzavent.

Next ,Yorktown was involved in operation desert storm.She also was involved in relief effort for Hatti and was the last ship to transit the Panama Canal before it was turned over to Panama. She was decommissioned and struck from the Naval Vehicle Register on December-10th-2004 and is awaiting scrapping.Among her awards are the Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Fund awards,Humanitarian service medal and two National Defense Service Medals.In the background is a Decommissioned Austin Class LPD or Landing Platform dock.I believe it is USS Ponce LPD-15.Ponce was named after Ponce in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.Her keel was laid down on October-31st-1966 by the Lockheed Shipbuilding Company of Seattle Washington.She was launched on May-20th-1970 and sponsored by Florence W Hyland,the Wife of Admiral John H Hyland and was commissioned on July-10th-1971.She spent most of her career based on the East Coast and Operating in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea Serving in Operating Desert Shield and Supporting US Operations in the 2011 Libyan Civil War.In 2012 for her last five ytears of Service,she became a AFSAB or Afloat Forward Staging base.She was modified to Support mine sweeping MH-53 Sea Dragon Helicopters.Ponce Was decommissioned at the Naval Station Norfolk and is awaiting Scrapping.
