Wie geht es weiter mit der Wiener Lokalbahn Cargo? Kurz nach dem ich am 01. Mai 2025 die 187 321 mit dem Containerzug TEC 42918 von Linz Hafen nach Dradenau bei Obernfurth in Oberösterreich aufnehmen konnte, wurde bekannt, dass die Wiener Lokalbahnen (WLB) einen Käufer für ihre Tochterfirma Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo (WLC) suchen. Der Verkaufsprozess soll spätestens bis Ende 2025 abgeschlossen sein. Hintergrund ist laut den Wiener Stadtwerken, der Muttergesellschaft der WLB, dass der internationale Güterverkehr „nicht zu den Kernaufgaben des öffentlichen Versorgungsauftrags“ gehöre. Darüber hinaus wurden deutliche Verluste erwirtschaftet. Daher will man sich künftig nicht mehr dem herausfordernden Geschäft auf dem Bahn-Logistikmarkt stellen. Nachvollziehbar, aber bedauerlich.

Shortly after I photographed the 187 321 with the TEC 42918 container train from Linz Hafen to Dradenau near Obernfurth in Upper Austria on 1 May 2025, it was announced that Wiener Lokalbahnen (WLB) was looking for a buyer for its subsidiary Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo (WLC). The sale process is to be completed by the end of 2025 at the latest. According to Wiener Stadtwerke, the parent company of WLB, the reason for this is that international freight transport is ‘not one of the core tasks of the public service mandate’. In addition, significant losses were incurred. Therefore, the company no longer wants to face the challenges of the rail logistics market in the future. Understandable, but regrettable.
