The Little Mermaid

β€œShe was a strange child, quiet & thoughtful; & while her sisters would be delighted with the wonderful things which they obtained from the wrecks of vessels, she cared for nothing[...]excepting a beautiful marble statue. It was the representation of a handsome boy, carved out of pure white stone, which had fallen to the bottom of the sea from a wreck...” H.C Andersen - The Little Mermaid

Here the Little Mermaid Princess gazes at her statue with an air of melancholy, there are no tears under the sea after all.

I have always loved the tragically beautiful fairytale crafted by Andersen & whilst I’ve featured the Disney Princess a lot I have never paid tribute to the tail that started it all.
