Llamas and Alpacas in the Andean Region of Peru

The llamas and alpacas that inhabit the Andean region of Peru represent more than just a cultural symbol; they are also a vital element for local communities. These animals, domesticated thousands of years ago by pre-Columbian civilizations, are fundamental to life in the high altitudes of the Andes.

On one hand, we have llamas, known for their resilience and strength, primarily used as pack animals. Additionally, their wool, though coarser than that of alpacas, is used in the making of clothing and other textiles. On the other hand, alpacas are valued for their fine and soft wool, which is one of the most prized natural fibers in the fashion world. Generally, these animals live in the high mountains, but in Cusco and Puno, there are places where you can see llamas and alpacas, such as the Inca Trail, Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and most of the surroundings of the Cusco region.
