Super Blood Moon

After waking up at 3am on September 27th, 2015, meeting up with some friends and driving to Kansas City, watching the moon set that morning, and spending the daylight hours in town, exploring and shooting photos. As sunset began we head toward Henrietta Missouri to set up for the Lunar Eclipse. We set up on Pryor Road just before the Eclipse officially began at 7:11pm and took almost an hour before the partial eclipse was visible at 8:07pm. At 9:11pm the full eclipse had begun. At 9:47pm the eclipse totality was achieved and that is when I fired of this shot.

This was probably one of the hardest shot I have ever had to shoot, manually focusing a 400mm lens without being able to see the subject and a few other factors made for a very complicated shot for me. And at first I was disappointed with the photo since I made the bonehead move of not checking to see what my focal length was before totality. So I ended up using only 285mm of my 400mm I could have used. However looking at the shot, I am kind of glad I wasn't all the way in at 400mm since I would not have gotten as many stars in the shot as I did. The stars to me add that subtle extra element in the frame so its not just the Moon but what is also around it being the stars. So overall I am pleased with the results of this shot.

This was also the first time I have shot a Lunar Eclipse and with it being a Super Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse made it even cooler to shoot. I have to thank my esteemed colleague who was standing next to me shooting the eclipse as well answering my questions on how to shoot these type of eclipses. I have shot a solar eclipse before and now this lunar eclipse. I must say it is a surreal experience watching a full moon go from casing bright light over the earth one hour to it being pitch dark the next hour and then back to bright again the hour after that.

Shortly after this was shot and totality had ended we pack it up and drove three and a half hours back toward St. Louis, whose view of the eclipse was blocked by clouds. We viewed the eclipse the entire time from 7:11pm-12:22am. It was a fun and successful day with some good friends, and good weather.

A few numbers form this day:

Estimated time spent driving around: Over 9 hours

Miles covered: More than 550

Time I spent Awake During this Day: 23 hours.
