(XLI): Anaquel's Abrupt Farewell
~Dearest sister,
Much to the relief of the company and myself, Tymius and Cullis have found us in the woods. I suspect it was you who sent them in the first place just in the nick of time. We are making decent time through the Forest of Time, and we should arrive just after sundown. The dwarves of Iriduel are anxious and elated to see you again, as well as Irin and myself. Before I send this last letter off with our last pigeon, I must ask how are my nieces and nephews? Are they learning to breath fire yet? I know having eight little ones must be a handful, or a clawful in your case.
See you soon,
~Gilaslan Fyre
Gilaslan sealed the letter and in a flash the pigeon messenger was gone with it. Another bridge came into view ahead of the company. The forest was thinning on the other side; they were nearly there. Everyone started to cross, but Anaquel stopped short of the bridge. Gilaslan looked back, puzzled about Anaquel's behavior.
"Aren't you coming?"
Anaquel sighed, clenching his bow, "This is as far as I go. I wish you all the best."
Gilaslan's eyes widened, "But I thought--"
"Sir Gilaslan, I do live in Animania. My home is in Thylak, not too far from this bridge, much closer than your destination. I cannot go any farther anyway…"
"Why not?"
Anaquel's gaze fell to the ground and a saddened frown grow on his face. He sighed, " By order of the king, I am forbidden to enter the kingdom grounds outside my village. To him, I am an outlaw, a vigilante. I had the title "The Green Hoodwink", I tricked thieves into putting back what they stole without realizing it. The king wasn't a fan, said I should leave the criminals to the real heroes…"
"But my sister can convince King Gian you are doing it with good intent." replied Gilaslan.
Anaquel shook his head and turned away with a slight smile. "She has tried before, it never succeeds. But do tell her many thanks!"
And with that the mysterious man skid down the embankment and onto the ground below. Gilaslan ran to catch up with the others who had already crossed the bridge. The sun was dipping below the forest canopy when the distant skyline of black towers and a titanic mountain came into view…
