Clarks stricken Lotus left the Hockenheim, track at the 2.1 marker (exact location on accompanying map picture). A single track marshal witnessing the incident. The ferocity of the high speed impact can be seen from the remains of his Lotus Ford which disintegrated on impact with a number of the trees lining the circuit. The marshal likened the impact to an 'explosion' and the sight that greeted him akin to an aircraft crash such was the devastation that greeted him.
