Old part of the town of Kastel Gomilica provided setting for the Free City of Braavos during filming of the Season V of Game of Thrones. Kastel Gomilica is part of the town of Kastela (comprising seven small medieval castles), between the city of Split and the town of Trogir in Dalmatia, Croatia.
Kastilac (Kaštilac), meaning small castle, is the old part of the town of Kastel Gomilica, was a fortress (castle) of a Benedictine Monastery located by the Adriatic Sea, donated to the Benedictines by the King Zvonimir of Croatia in 1078 AD, and further expanded during the 12th century. During the Ottoman threat to the region, Benedictine nuns completed the construction of a fortified settlement Kaštilac on the islet of Gomilica in 1545 AD.
