The photo was taken in Brooklyn Heights,one of Brooklyn's oldest districts.Besides it's low rise buildings Brooklyn Heights is known for its brownstone rowhouses,most of which were built prior to the American Civil War.By 1860 the neighborhood had 600 rowhouses.A typical rowhouse had three to four stories with the first floor above street level and reached by stairs or "stoops",a word derived from the Dutch.The brownstone material was quarried in Passaic County,New Jersey.
Brooklyn Heights is also one of New York City's affluent neighborhoods,even more expensive than some parts of Manhattan!In 2010 the average median household income was $119,999 dollars.Many notables,past and present,have lived in Brooklyn Heights.They include:Mary Tyler Moore (who btw was born in Brooklyn),Tyra Banks,Javier Bardem, Norman Mailer,Marilyn Monroe,Matthew Broderick,Harriet Beecher Stowe,Paul Giamatti,Amy Ryan,Amy Lee,and Sarah Jessica Parker to name a few.
