It blooms in summer and autumn, displaying globose and dense inflorescences, which look like small “pompoms”, with pink or purplish flowers, with long stamens.
Pennyroyal has been cultivated since antiquity for its aromatic and medicinal qualities. It was customary to burn the herb to repel fleas and other insects from homes, hence the name pulegium, from Latin, which derives from pulex, a reference to "fleas".
In addition to being a repellent, pennyroyal is also used to purify water, perfume the environment and season drinks and foods, such as teas, liqueurs, wines, salads, stews, roasts, puddings, etc.
Its leaves have a high concentration of aromatic essential oils, with many properties. Greeks and Romans already consumed the herb in the form of teas and infusions, with medicinal purposes.
