you may remember from school that snails of the genus Cepea show 'balanced polymorphism' in which many colour and banding types exist as no single strategy wins in terms of camouflage against predatory birds such as thrushes. This random sample from my garden shows the principle. No snails were harmed during the taking of the photo ; )
