Worse than a bee sting...

Some claim that an adder bite (Vipera berus) is no worse than a bee sting, which is both misleading and potentially dangerous, not only to the person who risks being bitten but also to adders which face being persecuted as a result of people taking liberties with them. I've now been tagged four times, and this one, a bite to the right wrist which happened when a section of cliff gave way as I was approaching an adder in Dorset, landing my hand on the snake, was the worst by some distance. It necessitated hospitalization, antivenom, adrenaline and the odd moment of panic when the symptoms became systemic (vomiting, swelling beyond the elbow and swings in blood pressure). Thanks to all the staff at Poole Hospital who treated me so efficiently.
