Nictitating Membrane
While taking close up shots of the heron, I accidentally got a lucky shot of that third eyelid. The purpose is to protect the eye from injury and debris, keep the cornea moist by distributing tears, and help clear the eye's surface. I cropped this shot to show as much detail as possible.
