There's A Fly In The Birdseed
Totally harmless soldier fly trying to pass itself off as a scary wasp. Cool eyes when you light them up. They are great insects to have in your yard. The larvae break down organic material & return nutrients to the soil. The larvae are also a inexpensive & excellent source of protein that can easily be mass produced. Used for livestock feed, pet food and human consumption. They are at their nutritional peak at pupal stage. With animal feed they can be stored at room temperature for several weeks. For humans they are used to help with world hunger. As they cook, they smell like cooked potatoes & the taste is describes as nutty and a bit meaty.
Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens)
