Robin Investigates: Uneasy Connections
If Spinneret runs around any longer, god knows what could happen. It's by sheer dumb luck that only one cop bit the dust. Alot will be off duty though with all the injuries sustained. And then there's the other officer that got blown to high holy hell a few days back. The blood of two lawmen spilled is too much. I don't like the GCPD, sure, but they don't deserve this. These men have families. Me and Steph couldn't hound around for evidence at city hall shortly after the attack, but someone else was. The one cop in GCPD that probably has the most power against me, Steph, and Jackie. Detective Abraham Arlington. I made sure that during his sweep of city hall, a message got to him. A message to appear at a spot in Sheldon Park at around 11:00 PM, and to bring whatever info he found from the attacks. Sure, I could've gotten all the evidence I wanted after the smoke cleared from the attack and no-one was looking, but this is far more necessary. This isn't about just some evidence. This is about setting some things straight. I wait around the spot in Sheldon Park for him to appear. There's a trashcan and a row of 4 lamps next to a path. He arrives right on time. I over-dramatically cut the lights to the lamps and appear in front of him on the path out of the shadows, the only light coming from some nearby skyscrapers and the moon. He's more than kind enough to start the conversation.
"Nice to see you, Tim."
"Same to you, Uriel."
"Heh. So you know about my other 'Job', huh buddy?"
"I'm not your buddy."
"......."
"Officer Charles Walker Sr was the one casualty of today's attack. He was murdered by one of Spinneret's thugs, chased him down. I saw. What did you find?"
"Well, he was shot multiple times. Some shell casings were found about 20 feet away from his body."
"You have one of these shell casings on you?"
"Just one. It's all I can give. You have no idea what kind of trouble I can get into for taking this to you."
"It's far from the worst trouble you can get in, especially if you can keep that mouth shut."
"Oh, is that why I'm out here? Because you think I'm gonna rat you and your friends out?"
"GCPD hasn't been that trustworthy the last couple of...well, decades, especially some of the high ranking officers."
"And some kid in a hood swinging a big stick is?"
"........"
"Look kid, you think whatever you want of me, but I'm far from whatever your mind puts together. I actually believe in helping the good people in this city. Not different from you, Stephanie, or Jackie."
"And using that badge instead of a sword would be better. This cape and spandex deal isn't what you take it for, and neither are the people you work with while you have that armor on."
"Don't talk to me like I don't know what I doing! I risk my life and my family's lives every time I have the badge on me. Uriel is simple more effective. That's why I chose the role. And how can you say that about Michael? You fought alongside that man yourself."
"I wasn't talking about Michael."
"Look, I know Davao is... you know, but he's almost as resourceful as you and....well, him..."
Abe points upward to the sky, and in the nighttime clouds shines the bat-signal. Huh, wonder what he's up to tonight....
"Davao's a madman, Abe. You shouldn't be anywhere near that disturbed---"
"Jackie was once 'disturbed'. Now look at him."
"So you know what he is...hard to believe you're still okay with him being anywhere near Johnny."
"I'm okay because I can see that Jackie is a good person. The things he did when he was Stasis...I can tell they were out of his control. They did more than isolate him at those labs. Besides. Johnny needs a friend like Jackie, just like Jackie needs a friend like Johnny. You know this, Tim."
"........"
"........"
"Drop the Uriel crap, Abe, and keep the cat in the bag if you wanna stay safe."
"Look kid, just because you got a head start at this whole vigilante thing doesn't make you better than me! You're not the only one who can be a hero."
"You can't be a hero just because you want to. You need a reason."
"What's yours, huh? What could you have to make you do this every night? You lived a good life, you still have a dad, and live off billions. What reason could you have?"
"If you wanna be the good guy so badly, the let me give you your first real lesson. Sometimes Abe, the people who need saving aren't the cats in the trees or the ransom hostages. Sometimes, the people who need saving the most are the ones who are supposed to be doing the saving in the first place."
Chances are he'll never get it, but nevertheless i still vanish back into the shadows and out of his sight. I watch a bit more hidden away, as he stands in the middle of the path, looking confused. He looks back up to the still-lit bat-signal, a slight look of realization taking over the confusion. Heh, maybe he is smarter than the average cop. He'll need a bit more than just brainpower though if he wants to be someone like me, Steph and Jackie. Uriel, you're on a rough path...
