Wolfpack vs. Redskins
The Trinity Wolves started the Championship game against the Colusa Redskins by receiving the ball. Jerad Harris carried the ball 8 yards before fumbling and Colusa recovering the ball. Colusa’s Jeremy Hernandez held the quarterback keeper for the first touchdown of the night and then they connected the extra point to make the score 0-7. At the kickoff, Luke Curran ran for a 10 yard gain and then Dakota Hayward added 37 yards in the next two plays. Colusa regained the ball on downs, but the Wolves defense held the Redskins to few yards. As the Wolves Harris moved the ball, which allowed Curran to go up the middle to move closer to the goal. Harris added 7 yards to set Curran up to put the Wolves on the board, but the Redskins blocked the extra point and put an end to the first quarter 6-7.
The second quarter found the Redskins in control of the ball and the Wolfpack defense holding their own to not allow the Redskins to gain yardage. Curran was able to run the punt return for 26 yards but Trinity turned the ball over on downs. Trinity’s Ben Walgren was able to down the ball on Trinity’s 5 yard line to give the Redskins a challenge to gain yards. Trinity and Colusa traded the ball back and forth to go into the halftime with the Redskins leading 6-7.
The Trinity and Colusa Cheerleaders added a halftime show of their own rendition of “WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS” to entertain the filled stands for both teams.
With both teams heading into the third quarter the Wolves kicked the ball. Cole Whaley and Dakota Hayward where able to sack the quarterback and gain the ball in downs. Hayward returned the punt for a run of 10 yards, then Curran unleashed his running ability to advance 46 yards. Not able to score, Justin Jeangerard kicked in a field goal to bring the Wolves up 9-7. The Redskins regained the ball but Whaley and Hayward went after the quarterback again for another sack. In the last eight seconds of the quarter Curran was again able to get into the end zone and Jeangerard added the extra point to bring the score to 16-7 and end the third quarter.
The fourth found Colusa receiving the kickoff and advancing up the field. Colusa’s Vincent Gutierrez was able to get passed Trinity’s defense to score a touchdown, but Curran stopped the two point conversion to leave the score at 16-13 Trinity. With Trinity’s Curran receiving the kick off and slipping at the 5 yard line, the next play found Hayward advancing 13 yards, before Jeangerard kicked the punt for 45 yards to Colusa. The Redskins were able to advance 13 yards before being taken down by Vincent Sharp and Eddie Moreno. Then Moreno took the quarterback down in a sack to turn the ball back over to the Wolves. Jeangerard played it safe and knelt on the ball to run the clock out. The Trinity Wolves are your 2009 California Interscholastic Federation Northern Division Champions with a win over the Colusa Redskins 16-13. The Redskins played a very hard and challenging game against the Wolves.
