“I know a drag queen named Wanda . . .” I first stumbled on to Lucky Bitch Radio this past March, while toolin’ around the internet one day. I wasn’t quite sure what to make of podcasting at that point, but something about LBR caught my attention. I’ve known my share of drag queens over the years (having one in your corner is like having your own street gang, therapist, cheering section, color commentary and camp-culture expert wherever you go; highly recommended). But right off the bat, I knew there was something different -- something special -- about this sober drag queen from Minneapolis. Wanda Wisdom, in a word, inspires. She faces the world with a unique blend of optimism and cautious realism, and is always willing to share a kind word of encouragement or an off-color joke. Normally, if someone were to sit around, sharing the benefit of their wisdom and experience, I would avoid them at all costs. But (again) there’s something special -- something wonderful -- about Wanda. Floating effortlessly between talk of racial sensitivity and ‘retards,’ Wanda offers a unique, thoughtful and sometimes downright dirty take on life as entertaining as it is thought provoking. Wanda truly is the biggest lucky bitch around.
