In this photostream, you will find photos of vintage retail stores such as grocery, drug and department stores, mainly from the 1950s and 1960s. The San Francisco Bay Area is best represented, along with a few other select regions. Most of the photos were taken during the 2000s, and will be uploaded little by little. Besides the basic structure and form of those buildings, I have documented their engineering design features, such as speakers, sprinkler heads and air diffusers. My screen name "Voycall" is named after a defunct manufacturer of intercom systems and speakers, once based out of Oakland, CA. Their ceiling speakers cleverly incorporate an air diffuser in place of a traditional speaker grill. This allowed the sound to be dispersed at all angles, and gave them a very recognizable design.
