Artist Statement

All of my art work relates back to three simple words; Suspended in Between. All of the ideas for my art work come from that place between asleep and awake where I am suspended in between a state of consciousness and unconsciousness. My existence there is as strange hyper reality where colors and textures are amplified and hysteria and tranquility exist side by side. The ideas born from my almost lucid dreams are sometimes merely still frames, or sometimes abstracted ideas based on them.

My choice of medium is also suspended in between two things. I work in a delicate balance between photography and painting. Both mediums are essential to my progress as an artist and my process in creating work. My experiences with photography have directly improved my understanding of composition and subject matter, while my painting has improved my understanding of color and texture and its role in my work. The things I learn from one medium carry over to the other.

Even while working within one medium I never truly stick with one thing. While painting I combine ink, watercolor, gauche and many other mediums. I try not to let the confines of the word ‘painting’ limit my pallet. The same goes for my photography where I will change from analog to digital and back.

From my first ideas for a piece of art work to my final project I am merely suspended in between.
