In the early 50s, whilst traveling by train between Kaiserslautern and Stuttgart Germany, I chanced to meet a distinguished gentleman while sharing space on the same club car. Rudolph scrutinizing with a keen eye and a loupe several 16 x 20 magnificent monochrome prints that absolutely overwhelmed me to the point of tears, much the way I had always reacted to Bach, Beethoven, and all the greats of music.
Through Rudy’s broken English and my limited Deutsch I learned he was on his way to Ulm to a photo exhibition to show his featured extraordinary masterpieces…we shared a couple of coffees and a little cognac and a young man full of questions about photography, film, cameras, equipment, and the making of serious photographs. and a thirst for selecting a serious camera and film on a tight budget and etc., etc. etc and we rattled on.
We arrived at my destination, shook hands, said our farewells, and lo and behold, He was getting off the train as well and commenting cheerfully, Let’s go get your camera!” Within a couple of blocks from the Stuttgart Banhof. We found a small camera store. We talked to the gentleman behind the counter and at last, I was now the proud owner of a Zeiss Super Ikonta made right here Stuttgart, used, and only seven dollars USD under 30 DM! Gorgeous at 3.5 80 mm size lens 100% manual settings once again we said our goodbyes and Rudy and I parted ways.
Thank you, my dear friend for all the information, help and definitely inspiration and motivation. It opened the door to my heart, soul and creativity that has served me for over 70 years. A great marriage was formed between my new Ikonta and Ilford film rated at 32 ASA…while I lived in Deutschland, I taught myself every aspect of developing and processing very satisfying, monochrome photography.
I gave color, both prints and slides every chance but never liked them much!
I have spent one year practicing, self teaching and studying methods and styles, on the art of b&w imaging digitally….and for the first time in many years I am finding a great deal of satisfaction in my progress.
