I'm a community college counselor and I love it. Before I became a counselor, I was a DJ/producer that specialized in underground electronic dance music...
...until I blew my ears out.
These days I spend my days-off work on the hunt for that magical moment when all the elements of an image fall neatly into place like they just belong together. It's such a crazy thing to witness.
I suppose my interest in all things urban started when I was in junior high. In the summer, I would take the train up to the city and spend my allowance on pizza slices and cassette singles. The pierced-up and tattooed punk rockers were the epitome of cool to me back then. When I started doing music in the 90s, I would scour the city for obscure records. In the mid-2000s, my time spent working at a record store on Haight Street ingrained a certain aesthetic into my being.
After I retired from music, I missed being around the hustle and bustle of the city...the air just feels different there. So after I got bit by the photography bug (back in 2010), the first thing I took pictures of were architecture and graffiti.
While I really got into discovering new graffiti in the nooks and crannies of the city, eventually I grew out of it.
Even though I spent most of the next few years refining my image making technique by doing nature and landscape photography there was something about the city that kept pulling me back...it's just so rife with life. So much is happening, all the time.
What you're seeing here is how I spend my days off. It's how I reward myself for working hard the rest of the week. I haven't been able to quite figure out why I do this, but I do know that it has filled that void that was created when I couldn't do music anymore.
And so it goes...
