The United Nations Mission in Liberia is a peacekeeping mission consisting of military, police and civilian personnel from around the world.

14 years of civil war left Liberia in ruins, its population traumatised and infrastructure destroyed.

In October 2003 the UN deployed its largest ever peacekeeping force to the small west African nation to make sure the country would not slip back into conflict.

The five years since the end of the war have seen the election of a new President and improvements in services and infrastructure. The military presence is still substantial, but gradually the UN Police and agencies are playing a greater role in Liberia.

UNMIL is now focused on maintaining security, rehabilitating and reintegrating ex-combatants, assisting in security and justice sector reform, establishing safeguards for human rights, helping to restore the rule of law and assisting with the reconciliation process.

The UN in Liberia consists of the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), and UN agencies FAO, ILO, IMF, UNAIDS, UNDP, UNESCO, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNIFEM, UNHABITAT, UNHCR, WFP and the World Bank.
