I have been interested in buses since I was at Junior School in Locks Heath. Every Friday we used to get taken to the swimming pool at another school in either a Ford R Series, or a Leyland Leopard which were operated by Princess Summerbee.
Having moved to Seaford in 1991 I was soon enjoying ex Southdown Leyland Nationals on the way to Secondary School. My 'sad' interest caused me no end of grief, but suffice to say it didn't dampen it.
Having decided that Sixth Form College really wasn't for me, I began working at Sainsbury's Supermarket, and stayed there for three years.
In October 1999 after turning 18, I successfully applied for a job driving buses at Brighton & Hove. This was a dream come true for me! On the 15th December 1999 I passed my PCV Test in Dennis Dart J987 JNJ (87), and made my place in the company history books as their youngest ever driver.
My time at Brighton & Hove was highly enjoyable, and I was able to bear witness to the modernisation of their fleet. Having driven for B&H during the end of the Bristol VRs, Leyland Nationals, Leyland Lynxes, and the trusty Mercedes minibuses, I left in October 2002 to become a conductor for South Central Trains.
I soon progressed to become a train driver in 2004, and saw out the end of slam door trains on the Southern Region. I still drive for Southern Railway as it is now, and look forward to the introduction of the Class 442s on the Brighton Mainline.
I finally fulfilled an ambition this year when I became a co-owner of ex Brighton & Hove Bristol VR JWV 270W. 270 is owned by five railwaymen, of whom myself and another, Dave Mulpeter used to drive buses in Brighton. I have many fond memories of driving 270 round Brighton, although 279 was my favourite!
At the end of July ex Brighton & Hove dual door Bristol VR UFG 625S was placed for sale on Ebay. I succeeded in my bid to by her, and restoration is now underway. All being well she will debut at Worthing Bus Rally in 2009.
I'm also a keen bellringer, having been ringing since 1994. Despite being away from the art for a few years, I resumed ringing last year (2007) and have not looked back since. I'm a member of the Sussex County Association of Change Ringers, and one day hope to become a member of one of the big two!
I also have a penchant for classic Mercedes cars, indeed I've recently acquired my second W126 S Class and very much look forward to restoring it over the next couple of years.
